Contract Workers Immigrating for Sugar Plantations
When Hawai'i's sugar industry began to take off in the 1800s and started producing on a larger scale, plantation owners began bringing in workers from overseas. Many folks came to work the plantations, but the majority were Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Portuguese, and Puerto Ricans (in addition to Hawaiian workers). This import of labor dramatically changed Hawai'i's demographics and is part of why Hawai'i is considered such a melting pot today!

Eruption at Mauna Loa & Lā Kū'oko'a
After almost 40 years, Mauna Loa, located on Hawai'i Island has erupted! This is quite a historic occasion, since the last time Mauna Loa (which, might we add, is also the largest active volcano in the world!) erupted was in March of 1984! Culturally, volcanic eruptions were seen as hōʻailona, or a sign or omen. Hōʻailona marks a time of change, and it just so happens that this eruption falls on Lā Kū'oko'a or Hawaiian Independence Day; this marks the day when in 1843 the Kingdom of Hawai'i was formally recognized as a sovereign nation by England and France!
