A Hawaiian Love Story for Valentine's Day
In the legend of the naupaka flower, Naupaka, a princess, was in love with a commoner named Kaui. They were not permitted to be married, so Naupaka vows to stay high up in the mountains while Kaui stays by the ocean. As the lovers part ways, Naupaka takes the flower in her hair and rips it in half, and gives it to Kaui. This parting of ways is so sad the nearby plants began to bloom in half flowers to honor the lovers. Today, there are two types of naupaka flowers, a variation that grows in the mountains, and one that grows along the seashore. By putting their half flowers together, you reunite the lovers!
