Born Lydia Kamakaeha on September 2nd, 1838, Queen Liliuokalani was the last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. She came to the throne after her brother, King Kalakaua died in 1891, making her the first reigning queen of Hawai'i! She worked tirelessly to restore power to the monarchy, weakened by King Kalakaua having been forced to sign the Bayonet Constitution. She had overwhelming support from indigenous Hawaiians, and fought to stop the illegal overthrow and annexation in 1898 facilitated by a group of white American businessmen led by Sanford Dole. She is remembered today for her leadership and efforts to preserve the sovereignty of her people.
