BRB, Taking a Break from Mo'olelo, Heading to the City of Refuge

In ancient times, Pu'uhonua, or City of Refuge was a place one could go to in the event they broke kapu law. Hawaiian society was ruled by laws called kānāwai, which dictated social order. Certain places, people, even some foods were considered kapu or forbidden. If one broke such laws, punishment was often death since breaking kapu would throw off the society's stability. As soon as a fugitive steps foot within the Pu'uhonua, they are allowed to seek refuge and be forgiven. In times of warfare, families could also seek refuge, and be allowed to return home without strife coming to them. There were several Pu'uhonua around Hawai'i, but Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau on Hawai'i Island is most the most well-preserved!

Kamapua'a

Kamapua'a is a demi-god who takes on the shape of a hog. His name translates to "hog-child". He is most well-known for his turbulent love affair with Madame Pele (yes, that Madame Pele).

In one story, Kamapua'a makes his way towards Pele's home after hearing about how she had travelled and made her home in Halema'uma'u crater. He chants to her, trying to get her attention, and she shows no interest. He persists, and she insults him, angering him, and they chant at each other insulting one another, which turns into a raging battle. The battle subsides when Kamapua'a calls upon his sister Keliʻiomakahanaloa to bring rain and fog to put out the fires Pele tried to start. He also swallows her and her family's home whole until he has a moment of compassion and lets them free. Pele sends down more lava flows, and Kamapua'a manifests into his kino lau (elemental form), the 'ama'u fern.

The battle rages for a while without much of an end, much like their love affair.
