May 1st is May Day, and May Day is Lei Day here in Hawai'i Nei! Lei Day became an official holiday in 1929 and celebrates the making and giving of leis, as well as the Hawaiian culture and aloha spirit. Every island has its own flower that represents the island, for example, Hawai'i Island (or the Big Island) is represented by the red ʻōhiʻa lehua blossom, and the island of Kaua'i is represented by the mokihana berry. The island of Ni'ihau is represented by small seashells called pupu shells, and is the only island not represented by a plant!
